Tales From the Loop

Tales From The Loop

  • 2020 Sci-fi
  • Amazon Prime (1 season)

I remember a long time ago when I first watched Wings of Desire thinking “Oh so THIS is why people hate art films”. Tales From the Loop is like that. Beautiful and poetic to a fault, way more interested in providing a look and form to all your 3AM thoughts than following any sort of narrative.
But we all have our moments of deep, thoughtful introspection, don’t we? So now imagine all your weird thoughts about the nature of life, time, love and reality all swirled into a painting of some rural town in Ohio where the landscape is covered with random robots that look like scrap metal.
I swear I don’t know how else to explain this show. It was created from an artbook by Simon Stalenhag, and its this vision that anchors the show, makes it so beautiful and odd and very much OFF. If the uncanny valley was an actual place, this would be it.
This is The Twilight Zone for the arthouse crowd. It even starts that way, with Jonathan Pryce’s face in full closeup providing the intro. He is so perfect for this sort of thing. Yeah, the show could a bit precious sometimes and slow, and I am not a fan of child actors, but that’s just knit picking. This thing is beautiful and unlike anything else on tv right now. If anyone else has watched let me know what you think. It’s a thoughtful show, and I would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm a lifelong writer and reader who finally got up the nerve to start my first novel. Wish me luck! In the meantime, I like to share my views on all things cheesy, creepy, deep, and/or ridiculous. Like me.

  1. Ok I’m only a couple episodes in but this is pretty trippy stuff here. It’s like there’s a weird haze just hanging through out the show. It’s not a bad haze but just the feel of it is something I can’t explain. I’m really liking it though. It does have a Twilight Zone feel to it mixed with some rural-futuristic, sci-fi giblets in. I’ll definitely update as I go on. So far so good tho.

    1. I’m glad you like! Yeah, I took my time finishing it too. It is a slow show. The “haze” as you call it is kinda like that 3AM vibe I tried to describe. It’s as if it’s all a dream, right? Super trippy the way it does that. Excellent cinematography. When you finish it, let me know which is your favorite. I loved the stopping time one, but I think my favorite is the 7th episode, with the robot brother. Oh DAMN this is good. You made me want to watch it again lol.
